We want to recognize Congresswoman Lori Trahan for her tremendous advocacy for water infrastructure funding in the latest U.S. House infrastructure package, The Moving Forward Act. Congresswoman Trahan has been a strong partner for our organization and our member organizations in the Merrimack watershed, in particular on the issue of sewage overflows.
The Moving Forward Act passed the U.S. House on July 1st, and the bill includes many of the core elements of Congresswoman Trahan’s Stop Sewage Overflow Act. In this legislative package, EPA’s Combined Sewer Overflow grant program will be authorized to provide $400 million annually for the next five years and the federal government is incentivized to provide funding to wastewater infrastructure projects in financially distressed communities. For every $1 a community contributes, the federal government must contribute at least $3. The bill is now pending before the U.S. Senate. The issue of sewage overflows is one that has been many decades in the making, so it will not be solved overnight. However, the House-passed infrastructure package is a strong step in the right direction to addressing this issue and ultimately restoring our rivers.
